Laguna Beach lost one of its most endearing and charming residents last week. John Thrash passed away in his sleep on October 11, 2004 at his residence in Laguna Beach. John was a familiar figure in his signature hats and colorful costumes. He was one of the early owners of the Laguna Health Club and founder of the famous “Hug Club.” John was known for his colorful window displays, especially during the holidays, his unique greeting cards and his annual caroling escapades with Big Bird! John was born in Barberton, Ohio on September 25, 1944 and grew up in Los Angeles and Glendale, California where he graduated from Hoover High School in 1962. He is survived by his mother, Lois Thrash of San Marcos, CA. , his brothers Paul E. Thrash, Jr. of La Canada/Flintridge and Dennis E. Thrash and his wife Tina of Spokane, WA. Surviving nieces and a nephew include Traci Oborny, Christi Clayton, Lori Sutherland and Greg Thrash. A memorial celebration is planned for Saturday, October 30th at Heisler Park –just north of the lawn bowling club. The memorial will be held at 2 p.m. with refreshments provided by Aids Services Foundation at the picnic area above Diver’s Cove. Balloons, photos and stories from friends are all welcome. If it’s raining, an alternative site will be posted at the Laguna Health Club, The Stand and Zinc Café. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that friends consider a donation to the Aids Services Foundation or the Laguna Beach Community Clinic. His lively, loving and creative presence will be missed by all of his friends and family members who recognized and appreciated his generous spirit.
